Audi VIN Decoder

Enter a 17-digit Audi VIN to read how it left the factory, then use the guide below to tell a Mexican Q5 from a Hungarian A3 — and to know which engine and gearbox faults to look for in the history report.

Audi VINs start with WAU (cars), WA1 (SUVs), WUA (Audi Sport: RS models and R8) or TRU (TT, built in Hungary).

Audi VIN decoder: reading the code yourself

Audi uses Volkswagen Group's VIN layout, which has one big advantage over most makes: the model is spelled out in two characters you can read without a decoder. It also comes in two formats, one for North America and one for the rest of the world, and telling them apart is the first thing to check on a used Audi.

PositionWhat Audi encodes there (US-market VIN)
1–3World Manufacturer Identifier (table below).
4–6Audi's codes for trim line, engine and restraint system. The decoder turns them into engine size, drive and trim — a 2.0 versus a 3.0 TFSI, or quattro versus front-drive.
7–8Model code (table below). On European VINs, positions 4–6 are ZZZ and this is the only model information.
9Check digit; Z on European VINs.
10Model year (table below).
11Assembly plant (table below).
12–17Production serial.

Audi WMI codes (positions 1–3)

WA1Audi AG, SUVsQ3, Q5, Q7, Q8 and the e-tron SUVs

TRUAudi Hungaria, GyőrTT

Audi model codes (positions 7–8)

FFA3, S3, RS 3 (8V generation)2015–2020
F4A4 (B9 generation)2017 on
FCA6 (C7 generation)2012–2018
FYQ5, second generation2018 on
F7Q7, second generation2017 on
FVTT, third generation2016–2023

Each code above was checked against NHTSA's database with a sample VIN. Older and newer generations use other pairs; the decoder resolves them from the full VIN.

Audi assembly plant codes (position 11)

CodePlantBuilds
AIngolstadt, GermanyA4, A5, the first-generation Q5
NNeckarsulm, GermanyA4, A6, A7, A8, R8, e-tron GT

RMartorell, SpainQ3 (2015–2018)
BBrussels, Belgiume-tron and Q8 e-tron SUVs
PZwickau, GermanyQ4 e-tron

So a 2018 Q5 is Mexican (WA1…FY…2) and a 2017 Q7 Slovakian (WA1…F7…D). Neither is a defect, but it's worth knowing when a listing says "German engineering, German-built".

Model-year letters (position 10)

Every maker uses the same tenth-character code. 2001–2009 are the digits 1–9; from 2010 the alphabet starts again at A, skipping I, O, Q, U and Z so nothing is mistaken for a digit. The same letters were used for 1980–2000, which is why a VIN's seventh character matters: a letter there means the vehicle is 2010 or newer, a digit means 2009 or older.

Spotting a European-market Audi

If positions 4–6 read ZZZ, the car was built for Europe or another non-North American market. Those VINs have no check digit, NHTSA holds no trim or engine data for them, and the car's early history happened outside US and Canadian records. The decoder above still reads the model year and plant and flags the VIN. Treat a ZZZ Audi like any private import: ask for the import and compliance paperwork and expect the history report to start at the date it was registered here.

Audi trouble spots to check in the history report

Most expensive Audi faults trace back to a handful of engines and gearboxes, so match the engine the decoder returns against this list. Years are approximate.

A VIN-first checklist for buying a used Audi

What a Audi VIN decode can't tell you

Everything above was fixed on the day the vehicle was built, which is exactly why it is reliable and exactly why it is incomplete. A collision, a flood title issued in another state, a rolled-back odometer or a skipped timing-chain service all happen later, so none of them touch the VIN. They live in the vehicle history report: accident and damage records, title brands, the odometer timeline, open recalls, service entries and ownership changes. Decode here for free as often as you like; buy history only for the Audi you are serious about. Dealers and flippers who check every car can bring that to $1.30 a report.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decode an Audi VIN?

Enter the 17-character VIN above. The decoder returns model, model year, trim, body, engine, drivetrain and assembly plant from the official NHTSA vPIC database. The first three characters: WAU for cars, WA1 for SUVs, WUA for Audi Sport models such as the RS 3 and R8, and TRU for the TT built in Győr, Hungary.

What do positions 7 and 8 of an Audi VIN mean?

They are Audi's two-character model code. On US-market VINs, FF is the 2015–2020 A3 and S3, F4 the A4 from 2017, FC the 2012–2018 A6, FY the second-generation Q5 (2018 on) and F7 the second-generation Q7 (2017 on). The decoder translates them for you.

What does ZZZ mean in an Audi VIN?

That the car was built for a market outside North America. European Audi VINs fill positions 4 to 6 with ZZZ and position 9 with Z, put the model code in positions 7 and 8, and have no check digit. The model year (position 10) and plant (position 11) still read the usual way. A ZZZ Audi in the US or Canada is a private import, so ask for the import paperwork.

Which plant built my Audi?

The eleventh character. A is Ingolstadt and N Neckarsulm in Germany; 1 is Győr, Hungary; D is Bratislava, Slovakia; 2 is San José Chiapa, Mexico; R is Martorell, Spain; B is Brussels, Belgium. The decoder names the plant for you.

Where do I find an Audi's option list?

On the vehicle data sticker, a label in the spare-wheel well with a copy in the service book. It lists the three-character PR option codes, paint, and the engine and gearbox codes. The window-sticker lookup shows the original equipment in plain English.

Does a VIN decode show if an Audi has been in an accident?

No. A decode returns factory build data only. Accidents, branded titles, odometer readings, service records and open recalls appear in the full vehicle history report, $5.99 for a single VIN.
