Since 2012 Jeep VINs have followed Chrysler's newer layout, which is unusually readable: one character names the brand, the next the model line, and the eighth the engine. That makes it easy to catch a listing that calls a Cherokee a Grand Cherokee, or a 2.4 a V6.
| Position | What Jeep encodes there (2012 on) |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | World Manufacturer Identifier (table below). |
| 4–7 | Vehicle codes. Position 5 is the brand — J on every Jeep. Position 6 is the model line: X the 2018-on Wrangler (W the 2012–2018 Wrangler), T the Gladiator, F the 2012–2021 Grand Cherokee, M the Cherokee, D the 2017-on Compass, B the Renegade, V the Wagoneer. Position 7 is the series. |
| 8 | Engine: G is the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 on Wrangler, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee; X the 3.2 V6 on the Cherokee; B the 2.4 four on the Compass and Renegade; T the 5.7 V8 on the Wagoneer. |
| 9 | Check digit. |
| 10 | Model year (table below). |
| 11 | Assembly plant (table below). |
| 12–17 | Production serial. |
Every example above was checked against NHTSA's database with a sample VIN. Engine letters are reused across Stellantis models, so read them with the model line, or let the decoder do it.
Jeep WMI codes (positions 1–3)
| Code | Meaning | Typical vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| 1C4 | Stellantis (FCA) US, SUVs, 2012 on — shared with Dodge and Chrysler | Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Wagoneer |
| 1C6 | US trucks — shared with Ram | Gladiator |
| 3C4 | Toluca, Mexico — shared with Dodge | Compass (2017 on) |
| ZAC | Melfi, Italy — shared with Fiat | Renegade |
| 1J4 · 1J8 | Jeep, before 2012 | Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Commander, Compass, Patriot |
Jeep assembly plant codes (position 11)
| Code | Plant | Builds |
|---|---|---|
| L · P · W | Toledo, Ohio | Wrangler, Gladiator; earlier Liberty and Cherokee |
| C | Detroit (Jefferson North), Michigan | Grand Cherokee, 2011–2021 |
| 8 | Detroit (Mack), Michigan | Grand Cherokee L and Grand Cherokee, 2021 on |
| D | Belvidere, Illinois | Cherokee (to 2023), Compass and Patriot (2007–2017) |
| T | Toluca, Mexico | Compass (2017 on) |
| S | Warren, Michigan | Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer |
| P (ZAC VINs) | Melfi, Italy | Renegade |
Note the P: on a 1C4 VIN it means Toledo, on a ZAC VIN Melfi. Always read the plant with the first three characters.
Model-year letters (position 10)
Every maker uses the same tenth-character code. 2001–2009 are the digits 1–9; from 2010 the alphabet starts again at A, skipping I, O, Q, U and Z so nothing is mistaken for a digit. The same letters were used for 1980–2000, which is why a VIN's seventh character matters: a letter there means the vehicle is 2010 or newer, a digit means 2009 or older.
| 1 2001 | 2 2002 | 3 2003 | 4 2004 | 5 2005 |
| 6 2006 | 7 2007 | 8 2008 | 9 2009 | A 2010 |
| B 2011 | C 2012 | D 2013 | E 2014 | F 2015 |
| G 2016 | H 2017 | J 2018 | K 2019 | L 2020 |
| M 2021 | N 2022 | P 2023 | R 2024 | S 2025 |
| T 2026 | V 2027 | W 2028 | X 2029 | Y 2030 |
Jeep trouble spots to check in the history report
Jeeps get used hard, so the history report matters as much as the decode: look for off-road damage, flood titles and repeated front-end work as well as the known issues below. Years are approximate.
- Death wobble (Wrangler and Gladiator, and older solid-axle Jeeps): violent front-end shake from worn steering and suspension parts, worse on lifted trucks.
- 3.6 Pentastar V6, 2011–2013: valve-seat wear in the left cylinder head (ticking, a misfire on cylinder 2); Chrysler extended the warranty on the head.
- Pentastar oil-cooler and filter-housing leaks (about 2011–2018): the plastic housing in the engine valley cracks and leaks oil.
- Nine-speed automatic, 2014–2016 Cherokee: harsh and erratic shifts, addressed by software updates and recalls.
- 2014–2015 Grand Cherokee: the electronic gear selector could leave drivers thinking they were in Park; recalled in 2016.
- Rear fuel tanks: 1993–1998 Grand Cherokee and 2002–2007 Liberty were recalled in 2013 for a trailer-hitch fix.
- Frame rust, especially 1997–2006 Wrangler (TJ) in salt states — look underneath.
- Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe: high-voltage battery fire recalls with park-outside advice. The free recall check above lists the campaigns for the model and year; nhtsa.gov/recalls confirms whether this VIN's repair was done.
A VIN-first checklist for buying a used Jeep
- Decode the VIN and check the model line and engine against the listing.
- Run the history report for accidents, title brands, flood records and front-end repairs.
- If the Jeep spent time where hurricanes or floods hit, check the flood car check for its counties.
- Ask whether it has been lifted or re-geared, and look under it for frame rust and skid-plate damage.
- Match the dash VIN, the door-jamb label and the title; pull the original window sticker to confirm packages such as Trail Rated, Rubicon or tow kits.
What a Jeep VIN decode can't tell you
Everything above was fixed on the day the vehicle was built, which is exactly why it is reliable and exactly why it is incomplete. A collision, a flood title issued in another state, a rolled-back odometer or a skipped timing-chain service all happen later, so none of them touch the VIN. They live in the vehicle history report: accident and damage records, title brands, the odometer timeline, open recalls, service entries and ownership changes. Decode here for free as often as you like; buy history only for the Jeep you are serious about. Dealers and flippers who check every car can bring that to $1.30 a report.

Frequently asked questions
How do I decode a Jeep VIN?
Enter the 17-character VIN above. The decoder returns model year, model, trim, body, engine, drivetrain, transmission and assembly plant from the official NHTSA vPIC database. From the 2012 model year the fifth character is J on every Jeep. Stellantis shares the 1C4 code with Dodge and Chrysler SUVs, and that letter is how you tell them apart.
Why does an older Jeep VIN start with 1J4 or 1J8?
Those are the codes Jeep used before Chrysler changed its VIN format for the 2012 model year: a 2011 Grand Cherokee starts 1J4, a 2012 one 1C4. Both decode the same way here.
Which plant built my Jeep?
The eleventh character. L, P and W are Toledo, Ohio (Wrangler, Gladiator); C and 8 are Detroit (Grand Cherokee); D is Belvidere, Illinois (Cherokee, Compass, Patriot); T is Toluca, Mexico (Compass from 2017); S is Warren, Michigan (Wagoneer); and P on a ZAC VIN is Melfi, Italy (Renegade). The decoder names the plant for you.
What is Jeep death wobble?
A violent shake of the front end, usually set off by a bump at highway speed, on Jeeps with a solid front axle — the Wrangler and Gladiator above all. It comes from worn or loose steering and suspension parts and is more common after a lift kit or bigger tyres. Look in the history for front-end repairs such as track bars, ball joints and steering dampers, and ask whether the Jeep has been lifted.
Is my Jeep 4xe safe to charge?
Check the recall result above. Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids have been recalled for high-voltage battery fire risk, with advice to park outside and not to charge until repaired. The free recall check lists the campaigns for the model and year; nhtsa.gov/recalls confirms whether this VIN's repair was done.
Does a VIN decode show if a Jeep has been in an accident or off-road damage?
No. A decode returns factory build data only. Accidents, branded titles, flood records, odometer readings and service history appear in the full vehicle history report, $5.99 for a single VIN.
